Wave Survival Game Mode: Rules and Tips (Free Co-op)
Wave Survival game mode is ZeroFront's co-op match rule: everyone in the room plays on the same side against waves of AI soldiers that grow in number and rank, and the team wins by clearing ten waves. Nobody is eliminated for good while the team is alive, because anyone who falls comes back when the wave is cleared. This guide covers the exact rules, how it differs from Solo Survival, how to start a room and the tactics we would use to reach wave ten.
What is Wave Survival in ZeroFront?
Wave Survival is one of the co-op match rules in the MATCH RULES list, next to Battle Royale, the round modes and the objective modes. Instead of fighting other players, your whole room fights the same AI enemy force. The rules, as they run on the live site today:
- Everyone in the room is on one team. There is no enemy player to hunt.
- AI soldiers arrive in waves, and each wave brings more of them and tougher ranks, from recruits to veterans and elites.
- If you go down, you are not out for the match. You come back when the wave is cleared.
- The room wins by clearing ten waves.
The catch is in rule three. A fallen player only returns once the wave is cleared, so the team survives by keeping at least one person alive until the last soldier of the wave is down. If everyone is down at the same time, the run is over. That single detail shapes almost every tactic below.
As with every ZeroFront rule, the room server enforces it for everyone in the room, so a modified client cannot change the wave rules or fake damage.
Wave Survival vs Solo Survival: what is different?
The two names sound alike, but they are different modes with different goals. Solo Survival is a warm-up mode you play alone, while Wave Survival is a team match.
| Solo Survival | Wave Survival | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | You alone | Everyone in the room, together |
| Enemies | AI soldiers in waves that get tougher | AI soldiers in waves that grow in number and rank |
| How it ends | Endless: you play until you fall | Clear ten waves to win |
| Extras | Rotating field directives for bonus score, grenades and pickups | A shared team goal and revives at the end of each wave |
| Needs other players | No | Yes, it is an online room rule |
| Where you pick it | SOLO SURVIVAL mode card | WAVE SURVIVAL under Match Rules |
If you are new, start in Solo Survival to learn the maps and the guns. In the menu, WAVE SURVIVAL is dimmed when you play solo, because it needs real players in the room. Our FPS game modes guide lists every mode and rule if you want the full picture.
How to play Wave Survival step by step
You do not need an account or a download. ZeroFront runs in the browser, and a room holds up to 8 players.
- Open zerofront.pro/play on desktop or phone.
- Press CHANGE MODE and choose an online mode card, such as TEAM DEATHMATCH.
- In the Match Rules buttons, pick WAVE SURVIVAL. Co-op modes always play in teams, so the room stays on one side.
- Create a room and share its five-character code with your friends, or join an open room from the lobby.
- Press START and fight the first wave together.
Playing on a phone? Touch controls and optional gyro aim work in rooms too, and our mobile browser FPS guide covers the best settings.
Wave Survival game mode tips for reaching wave ten
These are our recommendations from how the rules work, not hidden numbers, so adjust them to your room.
Keep one player alive at all times. Because the fallen return only when a wave is cleared, the worst thing a team can do is lose all its players together. Whoever is at full health should fight from cover and finish the wave while the others wait.
Do not rush in all at once. Spread your angles but stay within reach of each other. If two players are down, the third can still win the wave. If all three push the same doorway and fall together, nobody is left to bring them back.
Call targets by rank. Waves grow in rank, so elites will take more shots than recruits. Agree who focuses the toughest soldier and who clears the weaker ones. A short call such as "elite on the left" saves seconds.
Warm up in Solo Survival first. The guns are the same 21 real-world weapons in both modes. Practising recoil and reload timing in Solo Survival is the cheapest way to improve before you bring friends into a room. Our browser FPS aim tips are a good place to start.
Mix your weapons across the team. A team of identical rifles will all reload at similar moments. If one player carries a shotgun for close targets and another a marksman rifle for distance, there is usually someone ready to fire.
Use the quiet moment between waves. When a wave is cleared, your teammates return. Regroup, check ammo and pick a spot before the next wave starts instead of wandering off.
Which mode should you play instead?
Wave Survival is best when you want to play with friends against AI rather than against each other. If you want something different, ZeroFront has other modes for each mood:
| If you want | Try |
|---|---|
| Pure aim practice alone | Solo Survival or Campaign |
| Team play against other players | Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed or Domination |
| Tense rounds where every life counts | Search & Destroy or Elimination |
| A last-one-standing finish | Battle Royale (Solo, Duo or Squad) |
For example, our Hardpoint rules guide covers a team mode where holding a moving zone matters more than kills, and the browser Battle Royale guide covers the survival mode with loot crates and a shrinking zone.
Final thoughts
Wave Survival turns ZeroFront into a team effort: one side, ten waves, and a revive each time a wave is cleared. The key to winning is simple. Never let the whole team fall at once. Gather your friends, share a room code and see how far you get. ZeroFront is our own game, so this guide only describes what is on the live site, and the rules may grow as we update it.
