Capture the Flag Game Mode: Rules and Tips (Free)
Capture the flag is a team mode where you win by taking the enemy flag to your own base, not by piling up kills. This guide explains the capture the flag game mode as it works in ZeroFront, our free browser shooter: how a capture is scored, what happens when a carrier dies, how to win in three captures, and which habits help a team more than a good aim does.
How does Capture the Flag work in ZeroFront?
Each team's flag stands at its own base. To score, you take the enemy flag and carry it home. There is one catch that decides most matches: you can only capture while your own flag is safe at your base. If the enemy is carrying your flag, you have to stop them before you can cash in yours.
Here are the rules, exactly as ZeroFront plays them:
| Rule | What happens |
|---|---|
| Goal | Carry the enemy flag back to your base |
| Capture condition | Your own flag must be safe at your base |
| Carrier dies | The flag drops where they fell |
| Dropped flag | Goes home after 20 seconds, or sooner when a defender touches it |
| Win | Three captures, or the team ahead after ten minutes |
| Teams | Always played in teams |
Capture the Flag belongs to the group of objective modes, with Domination and Hardpoint. Those are won by the team rather than the kill count. Kills still matter because they clear the way to the flag, but a team that only chases kills will lose to a team that carries.
The idea is old. Wikipedia's article on capture the flag points to Bannercatch from 1984, where fallen flags stay where they dropped until a time-out passes and then return home. ZeroFront's 20-second return follows the same idea.
How to play Capture the Flag in your browser
Capture the Flag needs real players, so it is dimmed when you pick a Solo scene. Follow these steps to start a match:
- Open zerofront.pro/play. There is no download or account.
- Choose an online mode from the menu.
- Under Match Rules, pick Capture the Flag.
- Press Multiplayer, then Create Room, and share the room code with your friends.
- Wait for the room to fill. Rooms hold up to 8 players, and Capture the Flag always plays in teams.
If you want to warm up first, run a round of Solo Survival to learn the maps and the guns. Our guide to FPS game modes lists every mode and rule, and the browser FPS aim tips help with the shooting part.
Capture the flag game mode: the three jobs on a team
Every Capture the Flag team needs the same three jobs covered. These roles are our own advice, not menu options, so swap them freely.
Carrier
The carrier takes the flag and runs. Your job is to survive and get home, not to win fights. Take the route that gives you cover, avoid open ground and do not stop to trade shots. If you die, the flag drops where you fell and a defender can send it home by touching it.
Escort
The escort stays near the carrier and kills whoever chases. Because a carrier who dies drops the flag, the player closest to them is the one who can pick it back up for the team. Good escorts call out which route they are taking so the carrier can follow.
Defender
The defender guards your own flag. Remember the capture rule: your team cannot score while your flag is away from your base. A defender who touches a dropped flag sends it home straight away, which also frees your team to score again. That makes defence worth as much as offence.
Tips to win more flags
- Never carry alone. A lone carrier is an easy kill. Move with a teammate whenever you can.
- Touch the dropped flag. If an enemy carrier dies in front of your base, step on the flag instead of chasing the next kill. Waiting out the 20 seconds is slower than touching it.
- Watch the clock. A match ends at three captures or after ten minutes, whichever comes first. If your team leads, defend. If it trails, you need a capture, so send two players together.
- Keep one defender back. Even a team with the lead can lose if both flags are away and nobody is home.
- Know the map. Run each of the 9 maps in Solo Survival first so you know the routes between bases.
- Pick a gun for your job. A fast weapon suits a carrier. An escort wants something that wins close fights.
Capture the Flag compared with other objective modes
| Mode | Objective | First to win |
|---|---|---|
| Capture the Flag | Carry the enemy flag home | 3 captures, or ahead after ten minutes |
| Domination | Hold zones A, B and C | 150 points |
| Hardpoint | Hold one moving zone | 120 points |
Domination scores a point a second for each zone you own, and Hardpoint scores a point a second while you hold the single zone that moves every minute. Capture the Flag is the only one of the three where a single mistake, such as a carrier running alone, can give away the whole lead. For the full list see FPS game modes explained.
Common mistakes in Capture the Flag
Most lost matches come from a short list of errors:
- Everyone attacks and nobody stays home, so the enemy takes your flag and you can no longer capture.
- The carrier stops to fight instead of running.
- Players chase kills near their own base and ignore a flag lying on the ground.
- A team that is ahead keeps attacking in a single group instead of defending the lead.
Fixing any one of these usually matters more than improving your aim. If you prefer rounds where every life counts, try Search and Destroy, and for a last-one-standing finish see browser Battle Royale.
Try it free
Capture the Flag is part of ZeroFront, our own free browser shooter, so we are naturally biased. It runs on desktop and mobile with no download and no sign-up. Open the game, create a room, and see how far three captures get you. The room server checks every shot against the rule, so nobody can get around it with a modified client.
