Search and Destroy Game Mode: Rules, Tips and Play Free
If you want to know how the search and destroy game mode works, here is the short version: one team attacks and tries to plant a bomb at one of two sites, the other team defends and tries to stop it, and nobody respawns during a round. You can play it free in your browser. In ZeroFront it is one click on the play page, with no download and no account, but it needs other players, so you start it from an online room.
This guide covers the exact rules ZeroFront uses, how a round flows, what attackers and defenders should do, and how it differs from the other round-based modes. We are the ZeroFront Team and this is our own game, so every number below is what the game actually does today.
How does Search & Destroy work?
Search & Destroy is a round mode. Each round has two roles, and the roles decide everything:
- Attackers carry the bomb to site A or site B and plant it.
- Defenders stop the attackers from planting, or defuse the bomb once it is down.
- Nobody respawns. If you die, you watch until the next round starts.
That last rule is what makes the mode feel different from Team Deathmatch. A death is not a small setback you repair in ten seconds. It leaves your team a player short for the rest of the round, so you play slower, check corners, and wait for teammates.
The exact rules in ZeroFront
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Sites | 2 (A and B) |
| Plant | Crouch at a site for 4 seconds |
| Defuse | Crouch beside the planted bomb for 6 seconds |
| Bomb timer | Explodes 35 seconds after it is planted |
| Respawns | None during a round |
| Side swap | Every 3 rounds |
| Win condition | First team to 4 rounds |
| No plant | Defenders win when time runs out |
The plant takes 4 seconds and the defuse takes 6, so a defender needs more uninterrupted time than an attacker. That gap is deliberate, and it is the main thing both sides should plan around.
A round of Search & Destroy, step by step
- Spawn and choose a route. Attackers decide on site A, site B, or a split. Defenders decide who covers which site.
- Take the early fights carefully. With no respawns, being a player up is a real edge. Do not throw it away with a reckless peek.
- Plant. An attacker crouches at the site and holds still for 4 seconds. The rest of the team should be watching the angles, not the bomb.
- Play the timer. Once the bomb is down, the 35-second countdown starts. Attackers now defend the bomb, and defenders have to come to them.
- Defuse or detonate. A defender crouches beside the bomb for 6 seconds. If they finish, defenders take the round. If the bomb explodes first, attackers do.
Because the defuse takes 6 seconds out of a 35-second timer, a defender who starts late may not have enough time left. Starting early matters more than starting safely.
Search and destroy game mode tips for attackers
Defenders win if time runs out without a plant, so attackers cannot wait forever. They need a plan, and a plan beats raw aim.
- Pick a site together. Half the team at A and half at B means two small teams that cannot support each other.
- Clear before you plant. Planting in the open while an enemy sits on an unchecked angle is how rounds are lost.
- Plant where you can hold. The best plant spot is not always the middle of the site. It is the spot your team can cover from cover.
- Hold the bomb, not the site. After the plant you only need to survive 35 seconds. Take positions that watch the defuse spot and wait for a defender to crouch.
- Use the crouch. A defender crouching to defuse is standing still beside the bomb, so that is where to aim.
Search and destroy tips for defenders
Defenders have a simpler win condition: stop the plant, or get the bomb defused. Time is on your side before the plant, and against you after it.
- Do not all stack one site. If attackers plant at the other site, you have to rotate under pressure.
- Hold angles, do not chase. Chasing a lone attacker out of position pulls you away from the bomb sites. Let them come to you.
- Defuse with cover. Six seconds is long. Ask a teammate to watch the angles before you crouch.
- Count the timer. If the bomb has less than about 6 seconds left, a defuse cannot finish, so it is better to stay alive and take the next round.
How is Search & Destroy different from Elimination and Gunfight?
ZeroFront has three round modes in the Match Rules list. All three remove respawns, but they win rounds differently:
| Mode | How a round is won | Match ends |
|---|---|---|
| ELIMINATION | Wipe out the other team, or have more players standing when the two-minute clock ends | First to 5 rounds |
| GUNFIGHT | Win small-team fights in 40-second rounds, with the same random primary and pistol for everyone | First to 6 rounds |
| SEARCH & DESTROY | Plant and detonate the bomb, or stop it and defuse | First to 4 rounds |
Elimination is a pure fight. Gunfight is a pure fight with equal weapons. Search & Destroy is the only one where killing everyone is not the only route to a win: attackers can win by planting and surviving, and defenders can win by running out the clock. Our FPS game modes guide explains every ZeroFront mode and rule side by side.
If you know Counter-Strike, the structure will feel familiar. According to Wikipedia, its two teams compete to complete objectives such as securing a location to plant or defuse a bomb. ZeroFront is an independent browser game and does not copy that game's economy or rules, but the plant and defuse idea is the same.
How to play Search & Destroy in ZeroFront
- Open zerofront.pro/play. No download or account is needed.
- Press Multiplayer, then Create Room, and share the room code with friends. Search & Destroy needs real players, so it is dimmed in Solo.
- Under MATCH RULES, choose SEARCH & DESTROY. The game puts everyone on teams for you, because the mode always plays in teams.
- Pick a map from SELECT COMBAT ZONE, then press DEPLOY.
The room server checks every shot against the rules, so a modified client cannot get around them. If you want to warm up first, run a few rounds of Solo Survival or read our 12 aim tips for browser FPS games. On a phone, our mobile browser guide covers touch controls and gyro aiming.
What should you learn in the first three rounds?
Sides swap every three rounds, so everyone attacks and defends in a long match, and the first team to four rounds wins. Treat the first three rounds as a chance to learn: an attacker should note where defenders like to stand, and a defender should note which site the other team prefers. That information is worth more than a single kill.
If you prefer looting and a last-one-standing finish instead of objectives, try Battle Royale next.
